My Dream

I went to sleep last night
had a dream like a falling kite
I dreamed that you had died
I felt that weariness inside

The only way I found that I could keep you
Darlin' was I knew that I would eat you
Dragged your body to the kitchen eagerly
Worked into the night so busily

A roast, a little meat pie
A burger and a ribeye
Hey, I roll it in the dough
Even make menudo

I wanna taste you
I wanna baste you
I wanna sizzle and fry
Soup and salad I cry

Gravy and I'll sop you up
Save the drippings in a cup
Cracklin for a Sunday treat
Love you darlin time to eat

Happily I awakened dear
To find that you still were here
You're better than a sandwich to me
So we gonna live together happily

blasted seagulls

seagulls are bossy
selfish
and crude
treat them like pirates
and highwaymen
theyd kill you for your food

nature potions

nature potions
april notions
walk in meadow
wet shadow
recedes

rain over
rife clover
face-on deer
bunny queer
high the weeds

stale night and sad ballad

in the still stale night
sultry and sad ballad
in dungeon-like gloom
strobe light flake
on your cheek
who makes love to you
whisper my dear
sad one
makes you purr
when the bad night is through

I Ate My Heart For Dinner

I wrote of beauty;
It bit my hand.
I wrote of ugly;
It called me grand.
I ate my heart for dinner.

Literary Bombs

Write bombs of literature
On missiles well aimed
Attach a signature
To the frail and maimed

Planted in the libraries
Like Seuss and Einstein
Buried on the prairies
aged in bottles like wine

strangers in the woods

strangers in the woods
curious eyes
whiskers
tails
no parking lots
tall buildings
callous souls
sit
quiet
til human goes

flying

flying through the rains
on an everclear jet
tookie bird o'er the plains
romance an egret
i saw a smokin' toe
and a river slowly flow
before the marshmallow pink
set the plane on the blink
dive dive dive dive
you know slowly jive

salvation sixpack

melt walls to molten rivers
clog sewers like diseased livers
escape rat-hole cancer tombs
salvation sixpack in meadow blooms

on the blue wet beach

shoot the stars up at night
balance the moon just right
put out the common light
for we dance on the blue wet beach
punctured sun down below
wind blew clouds with the crow
jet black waves circular flow
dancing like starfish out of reach

Pilot

There's always going to be
A sailor on the sea;
Not always at his shoulder
A gun upon a soldier;
But the mote in God's eye
Got to be a pilot in the sky.
He got bombs the size of Detroit
That he don't hesitate to deploy;
He don't hear the people's cries
Or read the pain in their fearful eyes.

Lie to Me

How cynical, my friend,
To speak the truth.
No apologist's grin,
Extracted tooth,
Or face-saving spin.

When I Feel Like I'm Gaining on You

Gypsies on ships, wind waves on rye
I'm comin' to get you darlin', don't even know why
See the dog-eared moon, sinking low on her slip
Cross-eyed beggar stealing your grip
Smell the sea and sun as cross country you run
Don't you ever slow down, don't you ever be found
When I'm feelin like I'm gaining on you
I lose myself tween the mountain, and the mountain dew
Like Ulysses, I stroll beneath the sun
The parrots of doom can't hurt me none
Between the cross and gun, you keep having your fun
Never slow down, don't you ever be found
I rolled two bridges, drunken and gray
Thought I saw your face, on the broad fairway
Neath the curtains of night, I raced down to the lea
Still asking myself where can she be
The race is almost run, my stamina is done
I'm prostrate on the ground, now you'll never be found

I Wrote Some Poems

I wrote some simple poems of freedom,
Wrote them for you and myself;
I never dreamed the past would see them,
Let alone you and myself.

I rode the freight train into Texas,
El Paso to San Antone.
I left the poems and the nexus
And I went home all alone.

I wrote other poems, other things,
Wrote them for you and myself.
I keep them near all my Spanish rings,
I keep it all to myself.

be at ease with me

but as the wind that blows
rolls around all night
in the trees and holes
and the owl takes flight
will you sleep
at your ease with me

there we can warm our toes
we can hug for love
when the moonlight shows
its what we dreamed of
counted sheep
be at ease with me

war

my war haunts me
your war too
thats what taunts me
please be true
dont ever let them
hold you down
dont argue with them
and dont frown
their war haunts me
my war too
their war wants me
ill be true
dont ever let them
hold you down
dont reason with them
be a clown
dont ever let them
be a clown

the colorbook

pastels and crayons
the colorbook of our lives

and please don't stay in the lines

to simply eat when one bows

the moon's a rock

the moons a rock a hurled stone
flung by someones careless hand ill bet
some mischievous to the bone
kind of mark twain huck n tom mindset
who on the path meandering home
idly that missile he paused and met
sent it evermore to roam
then to home before his mom could fret

Alone

Moon turn off thy lunar beams
Lathe me not with tender dreams
Cast off love's heavenly streams
I'm alone and chaste tonight

Dot not the heavens with stars
Place clouds 'tween Venus and Mars
Forbear memory that chars
I'm alone and chaste tonight

springtime in houston

its springtime in houston my friends
the time the hot weather begins
the blue jays fuss and they bother
azaleas early martyr
sending blooms like comets to die
in lovely streaks before the eye
we make obeisance to the sun
like cats we make the hot tin run

poem

A tack or a nail
Attack or a rail
A sack or a pail
A shack or a jail
Poor anonymous must decide
Before boarding the omnibus of life

The Sides of Waves

The sides of waves
Are fluidly smart
They snides and sueves
and they rolls apart

in the interest of rhymes I had sueves pronounced with a long A.

Through the Mirror Wall

My world has stopped
Against a mirror wall.
I see depths I've never known.
When I pass to the other side,
Where the sun has never shone,
I'll build my hut
And then a pony stall
And plant seeds I've never grown

about sir creaky pants

she awoke from dreaming of her favorite knight
whimsical misguided utterly stupid creaky pants
he came before her armored for the big joust
bearing red flowers afixed on his worm eaten lance
rode gallantly into the fray of the fight
returned in foul disgrace to his home in rural france
ah but the judges they did not judge her knight
when the creaky pants come off in the romantic light

Loving Spring

I love the little birds
That flit in my trees and sing
I love the naughty squirrel
That sits above everything
I love the springtime loom
That weaves the leaves
And makes the color bloom

No Title

Suddenly I feel cold. And alone.
Ready to lie in the ground prone.
Why did my mama let me survive?
I don't deserve to be alive.

Ash Tree

Premature, the ash prospers,
Having its own secret dopplers;
Cold wind and relentless rain
Could only rattle the ash tree's chain.
It stands near the swimming pool
In spring raiment when jackets rule,
Cheery as Easter children,
Offering leaves birds can build in.

tousled hair grandson
grins big as the sun
run with outstretched arms
into hugs snuggly warms
little hand in my hand

apple time air

slip those sleepy-time dreams beneath your pillow
for now its apple time air as curtains billow
suns arose to throw a shadowy scribble
of aspin leaves and a bit of willow

leave those sleepy-time dreams with the teddy bears
leave them with the rust of yesterday cares
leave them with the dark at the top of the stairs
leave them to the tasks of at night-time affairs

rattle down dusty roads
canvass water bags
mama stops digs her toes
grips a limb and snags
wild apples

good years for little boys to be alive

to the orange groves
of lindsay migrant ghosts
family that roves
wild apples

the paw and the thorn

the sword within the wound
and the pain
felt as one as you twist the sword

if you die before you live
